“To me, a holistic approach to treatment is the answer”
Starting from a very young age, I knew I wanted to provide care for people. My passion for nursing began while I was taking care of my grandmother who suffered from Alzheimer’s, and my passion for psychiatry stems from growing up in Nigeria, where mental illness was something stigmatized, hidden and shamed.
People who live with mental illness deserve care, education, and to be included in their treatment. Wanting to be part of that mission, I have now been working in mental health for several years.
To me, a holistic approach to treatment is the answer, where medication management is just one component of a client’s care plan. Using a combination of therapy and medication, my goal is to maximize care for an individual with the least amount of medication possible. This has led me to specialize in the management of anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, PTSD, schizophrenia, and other psychotic disorders.
I am an active listener and team player with my clients. Working with people who are ready to feel better, I make sure they are essential members of their treatment team and care plan. That means clients and I work together to choose the right medication that works for them.
From providing an easy and efficient intake process, to maintaining availability and reachability– I believe to be are liable, skilled, and dedicated mental health provider.
Currently enrolled in my doctorate degree, I am as motivated to learn as ever. I am actively involved in continuous education seminars, and believe in the lifelong learning required as mental health care continues to evolve and reach new heights.
With that, I also believe that collaborating with other providers improves patient outcomes, prevents unnecessary testing repeats, refers patients to the right providers, and prevents polypharmacy.
Empathy, respect, and kindness – those are my core values. As the first of seven siblings, caring for others comes naturally to me. It is something I truly enjoy and gain so much from.
I am always learning so much from clients I work with, feeling blessed for the opportunity to connect with people from diverse cultures and backgrounds. Culture is a crucial aspect of an individual, and I greatly respect it and acknowledge it in my approach to providing care.
I think the mental health is evolving incredible ways. With telehealth, for example, clients can easily access mental health treatment in the comfort of their own homes – giving them a sense of privacy and control in their care plan. With that, I stay on the radar of new medications entering the market, since many offer high effectiveness with fewer side effect profiles.
